RANA,CHANDIGARH—MAY 17—The Information and Technology (IT) industry in Rajiv Gandhi Technology Park (RGCTP), keeping pace with global recovery, has done well during the last fiscal and seems set to post robust growth. According to official data, the IT industry in Chandigarh clocked software exports of Rs 1500 crore in fiscal 2011-12, which is Rs 520 crore more than Rs 980 crore posted in 2010-11.
Disclosing this here on Tuesday an official of the IT said that defying the all odds, the IT units located in RGCTP registered a robust growth of more than 18 per cent in software exports last fiscal which aggregated Rs 1500 crore included Rs 221.23 crore of non-SEZ area; Rs 1074.89 crore of SEZ area and Rs 203 crore from other parts of UT as compared to Rs 980 crore during the corresponding period of 2010-11.
The official further stated that more than 16000 professionals were working in IT Park and an investment of more than Rs 1100 crore has poured in. The total investment in Phase I and II was of Rs 3700 crore. It is estimated that after completion of Phase I and II, RGCTP would provide direct employment to more than 30,000 professionals, Phase II wouldl involve an investment of Rs 2500 crore and shall provide jobs to an estimated 35,000 persons, said the official.
The IT industry in Chandigarh has not allowed the meltdown to melt its software exports which continue to make the ascending graph. “The best year for the industry was 2008-09 when it registered an increase of 48 per cent in software exports,” stated the official. At present, six SEZ companies and 17 non-SEZ companies are the part of the IT Park.
Keeping in view the high end quality companies approaching the Chandigarh Administration, two sites of 30 acres each; two sites of 20 acres each and three sites of 10 acres each would be earmarked for IT companies and be eligible for main campus sites, disclosed the official.
The IT Department hopes that total software exports from the RGCTP would cross Rs 1500 crore mark by the end of 2013.
