CHANDIGARH, MAY 7:The Athletic Federation of India has announced a seven-member team, including two coaches, which will take part in the IAAF World Race Walking Cup scheduled to be held in Cheboksary (Russia) on May 10 and 11. According to AFI general secretary Dr Lalit Bhanot, the Indians athletes will be participating in the 50 km walk event.The team: Chandan Singh, Babubhai Kesharabhai Panucha, Harminder Singh, Parayil Surendran Jalan,Basanta Bahadur Rana.Coaches: Dr. Nikolai Snesarev, Harmana Ram.
The IAAF World Race Walking Cup is one of the Walking Events recognized by IAAF for Qualifying for the 2008 Beijing Olympics Games. The qualifying marks for the Beijing Olympics Games in 50 km walking events is 4:00.00 (A Standard) and 4:07.00 (B Standard). National record holder Babubhai Panucha has come closer to Olympic qualification during Indian Grand Prix in 50000m walk, looking forward to dip below 4:07 in Chebokasary.
MARKAN TROPHY FROM MAY 15: The Punjab Cricket Association has started its preparations for the new cricket Season 2008-2009 by launching its Inter-District Tournaments for different age groups for Markan Trophy. The first tournament will be held in the newly introduced age group of under-16 years. The tournament will be played from May 15 to 27.
Eight teams will be participating in the tournament to be starting from 15th May at different district headquarters. The probables for Punjab State will be selected after the completion of the tournament on the performance of the players in the tournament.
Pool A will comprise Chandigarh, Ludhiana, Amritsar, Zone B. Patiala, Mohali, Jalandhar and Zone A are in Pool A.
MCA TRIALS ON MAY 9: Trials to select under-16 Mohali Cricket Association team would be held on May 9,at 4.00 p.m. in the MCA Ground. The team would take part in the Inter-District Tournament organised by the Punjab Cricket Association for Under-16 years age group.
All players either studying or living in Mohali are eligible for the trials. The players must be less than 16 years as on 1.9.1992 (i.e. a player must be born on or after 1.9.1992. The players must bring a photocopy of the birth certificate or a certificate from the respective institute confirming the date of birth.
