CHANDIGARH, OCT 19 :Haryana claimed the overall trophy by winning seven gold medals and amassing 84 points in the 27th National Yoga Championship organized by the Indian Yoga Federation affiliated to World Yoga Federation at the Sector 42 Badminton Ball here tonight.
Traditional rivals West Bengal secured 68 points to be adjudged overall runners-up while Andhra Pradesh finished third with 32 points.Haryana won the men’s as well as women’s team trophies while West Bengal men and women were runners-up in both categories.
Haryana Governor Dr. A.R.Kidwai was the chief guest and distributed the prizes.Speaking on the occasion, he appreciated the efforts of the Indian Yoga Federation, headed by Chief Secretary Dharam Vir, for organizing Nationals in Chandigarh.
He said that yoga was not restricted to a religion but was a way of life
to attain health and prosperity of all human being. He announced discretionary grant of Rs.51,000 for Indian Yoga Federation and released a souvenir.
Speaking on the occasion Dharam Vir said that Haryana was the first in the country to introduce Yoga Scheme in the year 1975.
