Dr. Avnish JollyChandigarh, 10th October , 2008: Haryana Chief Secretary, Mr. Dharam Vir today announced to computerize all the district level libraries and link the book lending facility in these libraries.
Mr Dharam Vir inaugurated the automated library system established with the help of e-Grathalaya software developed by National informatics Centre at the Library of Haryana Civil Secretariat at Chandigarh. The software provides all kinds of features required to
automate the in-house activities as well as library services. The Library web OPAC is a web based user interface to access the library catalogue for searching. The web OPAC also provides the secured way of assessing number specific information from the library.
The Chief Secretary informed that the information of new arrival of books was now made available on net at the web site of the library web1.hry.nic.in/library. Each member could see the status of his or her library account on this site, reserve books on the internet and send requisitions for the purchase of books at e-mail address of the
Library secttlib@hry.nic.in.
Mr Dharam Vir also announced to computerize all the file records of government offices, about 85000 in number, for the easy assess of the people and bring more transparency in the functioning of government departments. Libraries were the treasures of knowledge, he said adding all out efforts would be made to popularize and inculcate the reading habits among people, especially the youth of the state. The facility of Library of Haryana Civil Secretariat which was presently being availed by the staff of the Secretariat right from class IV upto the
level of senior most officers would also be extended to the media persons and retired employees of the Secretariat on a nominal fee, he added.
He said that to streamline the lending facility and ensure timely return of the books, the defaulters would be charged Rs. two per day for returning books after due date. Speaking on the complaint of dumping sites at Gurgaon, he said that due attention was paid to shift the existing dumping sites for the convenience of the people. Meanwhile, adequate bacterial spray was being done at the existing dumping sites. The clearing of backlog of jobs of Scheduled Caste and
Backward Classes was also one of the top priorities of the State Government, he added.
The Librarian, Ms Aarti Chadha said that the Library of Civil Secretariat had about sixty thousand various texts in form of books like encyclopedias, state gazetteers, gazettes, fiction and general books like autobiographies, biographies, books on personality development and self help across the spectrum. The data in the library was updated through a vibrant feed back of the users and regular book selection committee. Set up in the year 1966 for providing data base in the form of books and periodicals to enhance the knowledge and information of the staff of Haryana Civil
Secretariat, the Library was now providing library facility to about 1000 members.
