But YUVSATTA’s ‘All Girls Cricket Team’ in Bapu Dham Colony, started with help of Education Department, Chandigarh, challenges traditional concepts of gender-appropriate behavior by incorporating sports and recreational activities along with literacy, life-skills training, and health awareness
Today, in a special function at Govt. Model High School (TM), Sector 26, Chandigarh Shri Pawan Kumar Bansal, Union Minister of State for Finance & Parliamentary Affairs, Govt. of India, honoured, 45 budding Girl Stars of Cricket Team of Bapu Dham with white trek-suits, Shoes and Cricket Kits. Prominent amongst those who graced the occasion included Mrs. Madhu Bansal, Mr. Pradeep Chhabra, Mayor, Shri SK Setia, HCS, DPI (Schools), Dr. Satinder Dhillon of Chandigarh Women’s Cricket Assoc., Mrs. Purnima Vats, Principal of GMHS (TM), Mrs. Pooja Sharma, Member, Chandigarh Social Welfare Board & Mr. Krishan Lal, President, Resident’s Welfare Assoc.
Welcoming the guests Mr. Gagan Swarup Bansal, Chairman of LIC Cricket Club which Sponsored the Project and is spending money to make first State of the Art Women Cricket Academy of the city at GMHS (TM) said that they aim to take these girls from State to national and international arena.
Addressing the children, parents and people present on the occasion Mr. SK Setia said that sports is an integral part for overall development of Children and he appreciated the role of volunteers of Yuvsatta & LIC Cricket Club for working towards empowering the marginalized children in slum areas.
Promising his support in the noble venture Mr. Pradeep Chhabra, Mayor of the city said that all out efforts should be made to promote sports at all levels in the city.
Rasing the issues of declining sex-ratio & female foeticide Shri Pawan Kumar Bansal said that this All Girls Cricket Team of Bapu Dham can change the stereotype image of ‘Girl Child’ and raise their status in the society. He also said that the burgeoning interest in girls’ and women’s sports around the globe provides an opportune moment to create innovative programs that empower girls and bring them safely and confidently into the public arena. Plus strengthening the right of children to play enhances their healthy development and builds stronger communities.
Presenting her vote of thanks Mrs. Purnima Vats, Principal of the School said that regular participation in sports promotes physical fitness, helps reduce chronic disease, and boosts mental health by reducing symptoms of stress and depression.
For Girls like Poonam the Captain of this Cricket Team are upbeat and looking forward to be in league with cricket stars like Yuvraj, Dinesh & Kapil Dev from city beautiful Chandigarh.
Later Mr. Pawan Kumar Bansal took stock of another project of Basket ball ground in the School for which he had sanctioned Rs. 3 lac from MPLADS Scheme and his better half Mrs. Madhu Bansal inaugurated the water sprinklers system for the ground. They also gifted a brand new Cricket Kit to the girls.
Shri Sanjay Thareja & Smt. Rajni Thareja, Director of Gurukul Chain of Schools also anounced on the occasion that there School will adopt 400 children presently studying under Sarv Shiksha Abhiyan in Govt. Model High School (TM) from September 5, 2008-The Teacher’s Day.
