The India Post,Chandigarh, 1 December, 2008: According to the Chairman Geology Dept, Prof A D Ahluwalia, world over the alumni do yeoman service to their alma mater. The alumni goodwill for Panjab University seems to be on the way to being harnessed. As the Second Golden Jubilee Workshop a guest session by Ms Piyush Trikha Data Specialist an old student of Geology Department, PU was held on "GIS" ( GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEM) marking an inauguration to Golden Jubilee Celebrations of the department followed by an on hand interaction in the Computer Lab of the Department.
Marking a very encouraging positive change the session was attended by all the students and professors of Geology and Geography department. Geographical Information System which involves better geographic or spatial data visualisation and further analysis of data. The session was based on key concepts of GIS and how GIS is being utilised in almost each and every field these days such as natural hazard management, exploration, survey, navigation etc.
The students were intensely interested in inquiring how GIS can be useful in geological applications and in analysing the terror attacks on Mumbai. Various questions were discussed such as "How GIS can be used in daily to daily life"; "Why GIS softwares should be used over other data handling software’s’ such as MS Office"; How data from different formats can be imported and exported to and from GIS softwares; and queries regarding careers in GIS were also addressed. GIS is now a booming area in India and world wide. Students and professors had an informal discussion during and after the session which proved to be very useful interaction.
Ms Piyush Trikha also met the VC PU Prof R C Sobti who congratulated her for the spirit and thanked her for the visit.
