Chandigarh, June 5: More than two-third of green cover of city beautiful is under threat, sharing this Maninder Singh, the Secretary of Yuvsatta said that due to expanding roads, edge to edge road carpeting, laying of unnecessary tiles, even concrete and iron grills around the trees in almost entire city, no space is left for air & water to go, tree roots are exposed due to ever widening roads.Today on ‘WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY;, around 60 young volunteers and children’s associated with ‘Bal Panchayat’ of Bapu Dham colony stood in sun during the day with banners and placards in hands proclaiming ‘FREE THE TREE’. Tarun Kumar Saini another active volunteer and Peace Club member from SGGS Collegiate School said that it’s high time the concerned Departments of Municipal Co-operation, Chandigarh and Chandigarh Administration realize the futility of laying tons and tons of concrete around living green trees, at least they should leave three feet radius of green space around the trees for their proper growth and nourishment.
Akash the Chairman of Bal Panchayat of Bapu Dham said that from last two years they’re raising this problem at different forums with no positive result and now, if the Administration didn’t wake up from their slumber, they’ll soon meet the Governor cum Administrator of Chandigarh to seek his intervention in this matter of urgent environmental concern.
