Chandigarh, May 25, 2011; Three months back a very innovative two year ‘English Access Microsholarship Program’ was launched, which involves teaching 100 students between 14 to 16 years of age, of three Government Schools in Sector 26 i.e. Govt. Sr. Sec. School (Timber Market), Govt. Model High School (Police Lines) and Govt. Middle School, Bapu Dham Colony.Today a special function was organized to further motivate these students at Govt. Sr. Sec. School, (Timber Market), Sector 26, Chandigarh. This US Embassy, New Delhi funded programme is managed by Yuvsatta with support of Education Department, Chandigarh Administration. Explaining the programme Ms. Rachna Sharma, Access Program Coordinator-India, Regional English Language Office, Embassy of the United States of America, said that the ability to speak and write English properly allows people to advance in the professional world. Being able to speak in English also widens one’s horizon in communicating globally.
English language has made it easy for everyone to access computers and Internet. Pramod Sharma, Coordinator of Yuvsatta shared that the focus of the programme is to enhance their English language skills so that they have a competitive edge in academic and professional life. Around 55 girls and 45 boys of Bapu Dham Colony, are regularly taking their after School English classes at Government Sr. Sec. School (Timber Market), Sector 26, Chandigarh. Prominent amongst those who were present today included Mrs. Alka Mehta, Principal, Govt. Sr. Sec. School (TM), Sector 26, Ms. Sarah Anderson, a US Embassy English Language fellow.
