CHANDIGARH, JUNE 25:The Desh Prem Azad Cricket Academy today organised an exhibition 20-overs match played between Kapil Dev XI and Gavaskar XI at the St Stephen’s School ground in Sector 45.
It was conducted to celebrate India’s historic triumph in World Cup in 1993. On this occasion, Azad Academy also felicitated outstanding cricketers, sports administrators and sports journalists.
Among those honoured were Chandigarh Hockey Association secretary Yash Pal Vohra, Indian cricket selector Bhupinder Singh Senior, Chandigarh Cricket Association, affiliated to Punjab Cricket Association Mohinder Singh, former Punjab wicketkeeper Arun Sharma, former Haryana Ranji player Rakesh Jolly, SAI cricket coach Manjit Singh, Sushil Kapoor and sports scribes Donald Bannerjee (The Tribune) and Balbir Singh (United News of India) for their valuable contributions to promote sports.
Sports journalists jointly presented a memento of DP Cricket Academy to Dronacharya Desh Prem Azad. Principal Harold Carver was the chief guest and presented the mementos. As a gesture, Azad Academy also presented bats to budding needy cricketers Jai Kumar (hawker) and Arjun Singh, son of mali of St Stephen’s School. According to the Dronacharya, the academy was providing them free training, clothes etc.
Kapil Dev rang up from England to his coach Desh Prem Azad wishing him good luck for organising the function to celebrate India’s triumph in World Cup. Azad said that Kapil was happy that they were still recognised even after Indian victory 25 years ago.
Speaking on the occasion, Principal Harold Carver jokingly described DP Azad as a "googly masterby making me the chief guest in my own school." Aware of fielding overage players, Carver advised not to be tampted to resort to such unfair means.
Meanwhile, Kapil XI scored an easy eight-wicket victory and the highlight of the match was an outstanding century by Sachit Nayyar who scored 104, with the help of 12 fours and three sixes.
Required to score 154 for victory, Kapil XI who made 155 for 2 in 15 overs. Batting first Gavaksar XI had scored 153 for 7. Saurabh topscored with 31.
