CHANDIGARH, MARCH 29 :The Chandigarh players had a disappointing day their six players, who featured in the first-round qualifying matches made their inglorious exit from the $ 10,000 India 5 Futures ITF’s Men’s Circuit at the Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association Tennis Stadium in Sector 10 here today.
Local wild card entrants Deepinder Bains, Armaan Choudhary, Mandeep Yadav and Arvind Singh failed to justify their wild card awards. Only Bains put up a lion-hearted performance before losing. He went down fighting to Vikram B Reddy in three well-contested sets. After splitting the first two singles, Bains extended his rival to the tie-breaker. Reddy won 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (6).
Navinder Pal Singh and Jitin Bishnoi, both local lads, also bowed out. Ilya Belyaev of Russia defeated Jitin 6-2, 7-6 (5) and Chinese Ying-Zheng Wang ended the challenge of Navinder Pal Singh in straight sets 6-3, 6-0.
Meanwhile, eighth seed Rohan Gide and ninth seed Ajai Selvaraj, both ranked 1404, were shocked in the first-round qualifying matches. Unseeded Mithun Murali upset Rohan in straight sets 7-5, 6-1 while Chinese Zhuo-Qing Zhou pulled off a mild upset by shocking ninth seed Ajai Selvaraj also in straight sets 6-1, 6-4.
Out of eight wild cards, only Siddharth Gulgule and Prashanth N Vijay Sunder moved into second round.
Fifteen Indians and six Chinese advanced to the second round. Third seed Virali Murugesan of India overcame a stiff resistance from American Ryan Young before registering a hard-fought 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-4 verdict.
