As part of promotion of the Green Building Concept for construction of energy efficient buildings and sustainable architectural and engineering building practices in Chandigarh, one day training for Architects, Engineers, planners, officers of forest & environment department of Chandigarh Administration was held in UT State Guest House in Chandigarh on September 28, 2012. The programme was inaugurated by Sh. K.K.Sharma, IAS, Adviser to the Administrator, UT during which Sh. V.K.Singh, I.A.S. Secretary, (Urban Planning and Engineering) and Sh D.K. Tiwari, IAS Secretary Environment & Forests were also present. Almost all the 40 Architects, Planners, and Engineers from all wings of the Chandigarh Administration including Ar.Sumit Kaur, Chief Architect,UT , Sh.S.K.Chadha Chief Engineer, UT & Director (Env. &Forests.) attended the workshop. The training Workshop which was conducted by a team of Engineers, Sh.V.Nagesh Gupta & Sh. Puneet Mittal of the Hyderabad based “Indian Green Building Council” (IGBC) of CII (Confederation of Indian Industry).
The Worthy Advisor to the Administrator appreciated the efforts of Urban Planning departments in promoting environmental issues by organising this first of the kind capacity building event & highlighted the design features of the recently inaugurated first Green building of Chandigarh Administration, Paryavaran Bhawan. He also directed to follow the CPWD code in following at least 3-star rating in all future projects of the Administration. It was specifically highlighted by Finance Secretary-cum Secy.(UP)/Engg to enlist & implement the relevant recommendations of the workshop to bring effective results in all future developmental projects of the city in a time bound manner. The Chief Architect also apprised the efforts of the Department of Urban planning in preparation of the draft Green Code for the environmental guidelines of all future developments in Chandigarh.
During the training, the experts briefed the participants about the factors which are to be considered during the designing, planning, estimation and construction of buildings in order to make them Energy Efficient, Environment Friendly and Sustainable. As part of dissemination of the concept, a large number of case studies of various Green Buildings already constructed in India were presented in order to explain the finer details. It was highlighted that through intelligent planning of the project & its services in terms of Site selection, innovative design, the orientation of buildings, smart selection of building materials, energy efficient electrical, HVAC practices & landscaping services and adaptation of latest technology of simulation models from design stage to its commissioning ,results in a saving of 40 % to 50% in energy consumption and 20% to 30% in water resources can be achieved. The finer details of the Green Rating systems LEED was elaborated in the workshop to sensitize on all aspects of latest Green Building concepts, materials & technologies.
The training workshop was well received by all the participating professionals in furthering their technical skills and shall go a long way in implementing the draft Green Code and realisation of Green Buildings in all future projects of Chandigarh Administration .
