Chandigarh 19.9.11 The D.A.V.College, Chandigarh today honoured its students who had participated in international sports events recently. Shri Randeep Singh Surjewala, Minister for Industries and Commerce, PWD (B&R), Science & Technology and Parliamentary Affairs, Government of Haryana who is also an old student of the college was the Chief Guest.
Among those who were awarded were:
Abhijit Chadha who represented India in Golf in Asian Games held at Guangzou, China and won Silver Medal in the team event and also won Faldo Series Asia held in China last year;
Abhishek Rana represented India in Shooting in 3rd Asian Airgun Championships held at Doha; Ajitesh Kaushal represented India in World University Games held at China in August, 2011and at the Junior Shooting Competition held at Suhl, Germany in May, 2011;
Chetanpreet Nilon participated in Asian Games 2010, Guangzhou, China and in Shooting World Cup, Atlanta, USA 2011 and has represented India in 12 international competitions;
Deepak Sharma represented Indian Schools in Asian Schools Championship held in Macau, China in Handball;
Gurpreet Singh (Football) participated in 16th Asian Games, held in China in 2010 and won 11th South Asian Games Dhaka in 2010,the AFC U-19 Championship 2010 Qualifiers , the AFC Challenge Cup Sri Lanka 2010and the AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2011;
Hema K.C. (Shooting) represented India in Shooting in South Asian games held at Dhaka in February, 2010 and won two Gold and one Silver Medal in team event, also represented India in ISSF World Cup held at Sydney in March, 2011 and in April, 2011 in South Korea, and Won Gold Medal in Air Rifle in All India Open Shooting Championship held at Jaipur, and also was awarded ‘Champion of the Champions Trophy’ in All India Open Shooting Championship held at Jaipur;
Priyanka Sharma won the GoldMedal in 46thNational Roller Skating Championship held in Chandigarh in 2009 and Silver medal in the 14th Asian Roller Skating championship held in Taiwan July, 2010;
Purnica Bhandari (Badminton) represented India in the World University Games held in China in August, 2011;
Suraj Beniwal won Silver Medal in All India University and was adjudged among top 20 in the All India Tennis Ranking in under 18 category , and he represented India in the World University Games held in China in August, 2011;
Shri Randeep Singh Surjewala said that he was thrilled to return to his old college and honour the outstanding sports persons – who had won international laurels for the country. He wished all of them continued success in their endeavours.The prize distribution ceremony was preceded by a cultural programme in which students performed dances, songs and skits.
Principal of the College, Prof. Shashi Gupta highlighted the achievements of the college in sports. He said that the college had won Sir Shadi Lal Shield for ‘General Efficiency and Excellence’ in sports in Panjab University for 37 times, a record which was unlikely to be surpassed by any college. He added that the college can rightfully claim a unique place amongst its peers for having sent 3 of its students to the Asian Games last year. Again 3 of their students participated in the World University Games in August this year. No other college could claim to have sent 3 current students to such prestigious international events.
