Barinder Saluja, Chandigarh,May 31 : On the occasion of World No Tobacco Day, city doctors highlighted that tobacco smoking is one of the biggest public health threats the world has ever faced and that the 3 billion smokers worldwide are not only putting themselves at risk, but also the non smokers. Children in households that permit indoor smoking are at a risk of developing respiratory infections, ischaemic heart disease, lung cancer and asthma due to exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS). In addition, as per World Health Organization (WHO), youths exposed to secondhand smoke (SHS) at home are almost two times more likely to start smoking than those not exposed. An estimated 40% of children are exposed to secondhand smoke at home and are at a greater risk of becoming smokers. Explaining the phenomenon, Dr Deepak Bakshi, Nodal Officer, National Tobacco Control Program, Chandigarh said, ”Parental smoking, availability of tobacco products and household acceptance towards smoking are some of the additional factors that could encourage a child to take up tobacco smoking. Today, there are children who begin smoking as early as 9 to 10 years of age in India.”
Commenting on the scenario Dr. R. S. Bedi, President , IMA, Chandigarh said in the Function held at the Sector 17 Plaza , in association with the National Tobacco Control Cell, Chandigarh Administration on the World No Tobacco Day ……said, “Among smokers who are aware of the dangers of tobacco, most want to quit. An additional perk for them would be the fact that children whose parents quit smoking are less likely to be daily smokers. All forms of Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) doubles the chances of the smoker to quit smoking.”
Dr. Bedi explained. “Smoking even a single cigarette can cause nicotine dependence which provides a temporary sense of wellbeing, induced by a rapid burst of nicotine in the blood stream from the cigarette. Therefore, when a smoker tries to quit, the level of nicotine supply in the blood is restricted which produces typical craving and withdrawal symptoms such as irritability, anxiety, depression, insomnia, increased appetite etc. NRT is an effective treatment to reduce cravings and side effects associated with smoking cessation.”
A camp was set up for the spectators check up of the functioning of their Lungs with the help of medical instrument called “Spirometry”. By blowing air in a tube fitted with a meter in side this instrument tells the pressure generated by a body with which doctors can assess the working of one’s lungs. The reading & strength of lungs depend upon the height of a person. Many people took this test today.
Protect Your child from Second Hand Smoke (SHS)
1. Do not allow anyone to smoke near your child.
2. Do not smoke or allow others to smoke in your home or car. Opening a window or smoking in a separate room does not protect your children from smoke.
3. Use 100% smoke free day care centers, restaurants and clubs.
4. Teach older children to stay away from smoke.
5. Encourage the smoker at home to quit smoking with the help of experts and cessation services available in Psychiatary department, PGI
6 SHS causes 6000 premature deaths each year worldwide
At the function a Street Play was played, by Samvaad Natak Manch, out to carry the message as to how young people are enticed and trapped into smoking and how it invariably leads to the untimely and early death of the user. It also showed that it was not very difficult to kick this habit. The most important message was also that quitting tobacco products can also bring back good health and life ion the persons.
The Chandigarh Police in association with the Nodal Officer, NTCP cell carried out an intensive drive against the violators of COTPA across the entire city. All the SHOs were directed by DSP Satbir Singh to form teams under the Addl SHOS for this purpose and they have issued about 230 challans for violations under the COTPA.
