By Sanjay Pahwa, Chandigarh: Chandigarh Traffic Police organized Road Safety Exhibition/Workshop at Govt. Model Sr. Sec. School, Sector 16, Chandigarh. In this road safety awareness programme Sh. Alok Kumar, IPS, DIG/Chandigarh, all Traffic Inspectors and I/C CTP participated. Lecture on road safety was also delivered by Sh. Alok Kumar, IPS, DIG/Chandigarh. He emphasized that road safety issue is an important issue which calls for more attention from all Stakeholders. He said that Chandigarh Traffic Police is spreading road safety awareness through Chandigarh Traffic Police Facebook Page, FMs, AIR, Siti Cable, Advertisements in newspapers etc. etc. He further informed that approximately 1,25,000 lives are lost every year in India and the total loss of productivity due to road accidents is estimated to be 3% GDP of the country. In Chandigarh, more than 125 lives are being lost every year on city roads and streets. Therefore, we need to sensitize the victims in fatal accidents i.e. pedestrian, cyclists and two wheeler drivers (90% victims of fatal accidents). Simultaneously, the drivers of offending vehicles in road fatalities i.e. cars, buses, trucks etc etc. are also required to be sensitize on road safety. He also urged the students to obey traffic rules and regulations.
More than 300 students of the above mentioned school participated in this road safety programme along with Mrs. Anujit Kaur, School Principal and other staff. More than 2000 pamphlets on road safety were also distributed to the school students. To encourage community participation Sh. Gurnam Singh, Sh. C.S. Grewal, Traffic Marshals and Sh Gursharan Singh from Road Safety NGO also participated. Chandigarh Traffic Police is regularly conducting such road safely awareness programmes in different schools/colleges to create traffic awareness amongst the school/college students.
