CHANDIGARH, MAY 3:Chandigarh Football Club scored a well-merited 1-0 triumph over Golden Club in the final of the Chandigarh Senior Football Championship for the Sher-e-Punjab Trophy at the Sector 17 Football Stadium here today. CFC could have won the match by a bigger margin had their forwards capitalised on the chances which came their way.After a barren first half, Chandigarh Football Club snatched the all-important goal in the 78th minute through Bhupinder Singh who booted home from close range in a goalmouth melee.
Bhupinder Singh emerged the star player. Chandigarh Football Club took time to settle down. After initial probings, they had an opportunity to open their account in the 32nd minute. Bhupinder sent a centre from the left to speedy Rajiv Rattan whose first-timer shot on the run from close went out.
Chandigarh Football Club were unlucky as woodwork denied them a goal in the 44th minute. A combined move between Rajiv Rattan and Bawa saw the latter sending a centre from the right to Deepak Hooda whose powerful shot struck the crosspiece before the ball bounced back into the game.
On resumption, Bhupinder had two good tries at the Golden Club goal within five minutes. His first try sailed over the bar and later his grounder went wide with a narrow margin.
Against the run of play, Golden Football Club had a golden chance to forge ahead. Jagmohan Singh Negi passed the ball to Karan whose try culminated into a corner kick which was wasted.
With light fading, Chandigarh Football Club scored the match-winner in the 78th minute through Bhupinder who guided the ball on rebound.
Two minutes before the close, Anish of Chandigarh Football Club and Mojnath of Golden Football Club were shown red and yellow cards.
Akhil (Chandigarh Football Club), Mojnath (Golden Club), Aditya (CFC) and Ankit (Golden FC) were declared the best forward, the best halfback, the best goalkeeper and the best stopper, respectively.
