CHANDIGARH,April 30, 2008: The Centre for Adult, Continuing Education and Extension, Panjab University, Chandigarh launched a campaign on “Save Environment through Management of Waste” at Government High School, Sector 25, Chandigarh on National Water Conservation Day. 60 students from the school attended the Workshop.Professor Arun Deep Aluwalia, Department of Geology, Panjab university, Chandigarh addressed the students and teachers on the theme of global warming and how we could save the earth by adopting simple techniques like no smoking of wastage, reduce the use of polythene bags and save water, earth and air by closing taps and electric gadgets when they are not in use. He expressed that use of solar energy would go a long away to control the global warming.Mrs Renu Gandhi, Programme Co-ordinator from CACEE gave practical demonstration to the students on the theme of management of waste and said that there is need to have separate dustbins for dry waste and solid waste at the door steps in the family, educational institution and community which not only reduce the waste but help them to recycle the paper, polythenes, iron and steel products. This could be done through participatory development in the community. She emphasized that tree plantation of herbal trees would help to save the global warming in the present scenario.
Mrs Davinder Kang, Principal of the school said that there is a need to practice the awareness with regard to environment at community level. People know smoking is injurious to health still they practice it. She had a deep concern with regard to smoking habits among adolescents at school level which has to be checked by the Principal and staff of the school, she added, she added.
