Chandigarh, March 21,2012:On the occasion of ‘World Forestry Day’, the Butterfly Park at Sector-26 was inaugurated and thrown open for public by Shri K.K.Sharma, IAS, Advisor to the Administrator on 21st March, 2012. On this occasion, he also released the ‘Greening Chandigarh Action Plan 2012-13’ for the coming plantation season.
In his address, Sh. K. K. Sharma appreciated the efforts taken by Forest & Wildlife Department, UT, Chandigarh over past two years in developing this fruit nursery into a beautiful Butterfly Park. He also exhorted all the residents of the Chandigarh as well as various NGOs, Eco Clubs for taking active part in implementation of Greening Chandigarh Action Plan besides the Government Departments like Forest Department, Municipal Corporation and Engineering Department.
Sh.D.K.Tiwari, Secretary (Environment & Forests) in his address informed that development of Butterfly Park should be able to boost eco-tourism in the region for which Tourism Department should also coordinate and take active efforts.
In his welcome address, Sh.Santosh Kumar, Conservator of Forests-cum-Chief Wild Life Warden, UT, Chandigarh informed that this Butterfly Park is spread over an area of 7 acres and Forest department has planted more than 50 species of host plants and various nectar plants for development of this park very congenial for butterflies habitat. He informed that out of 65 reported varieties of Butterfly available in Chandigarh, around 35 varieties can be seen in this Butterfly Park over a period of time.
The function was attended by Shri V. K.Singh, Finance Secretary, Mrs.Prerna Puri, Secretary Information Technology, Shri Saurabh Kumar, DCF (Wildlife) and Mr.Kuldeep, DCF (Botanical Garden) and other Heads of Department of Chandigarh Administration. Around 60 students of Gurukul Global School, Manimajra also participated in the function.
