CHANDIGARH, OCT 2 : Border Security Force just managed to pip Punjab Police by 69 –64 points to claim the first leg of the 18th Punjab Annual Basketball League for Men and Women at village Gure in Ludhiana District last night.
In the first quarter BSF and Punjab Police shared the honours at the end of first quarter as they were tied 12-all. BSF gained a slender lead of two points (33 – 31) at half time. Playing fast and aggressive game, the security men consolidated their lead to 13 points as they raced to a 57 – 44 lead in the third quarter.
Punjab Police tried their level best to wipe out the deficit. However, the solid BSF defense thwarted all their efforts.
In the women’s section match, Jalandhar, having gained an initial lead of nine points ( 18 – 9 ) at the end of first quarter itself did not face any problem to outclass Ludhiana by 50 – 29 points.
Harish Rai Dhanda was the chief guest for the women’s final. Manpreet Singh Ayali was the chief guest in the men’s section. He announced to construct new basketball courts at village Gure. He also announced a grant of Rs 5 lakh to the village Gure. Ludhiana SP Gurpret Singh Toor, who is also president of the Ludhiana Basketball Association graced the occasion and international basketball player and DSP Batala, Kulwant Singh was the guest of honour.
