Chandigarh: May 14: Describing the entire election process of Zila Parishad and Panchayat Samiti elections held on 12th of May as farce and broad daylight murder of democracy in Punjab the Congress Spokesman S. Bir Devinder Singh said today that he is rather proud of the Congress workers and their bravery by which they have faced this goonda raj during last some days since the nominations to the results of Panchayti Raj Institutions elections.
Such abrazen lawlessness and crest failure of the law and orde machinery reminded the rural Punjab of “Tribal era” where there was no governance, no civil rights and no rule of law, only might was the right, Same thing has re introduced in Punjab by The SAD Musclemen everywhere.. He said that the very essence of democracy as enshrined in the Constitution- a free and fair election of the representatives of the people has been mercilessly murdered by the Akali Dal. Right from the nominations when musclemen of the Badals stopped Congressmen from filing nominations till the time of scrutiny when the nominations of Congressmen were rejected en masse by the Returning officers in connivance with the leaders of the Ruling Party the Congressmen stood bravely. The unprecedented violence which took many lives and left more than a hundred injured on the day of poll has been worst day in the democratic history of Punjab. He asserted that even the Ministers and M.L.A.s of ruling alliance were not spared by the goons. The criminal silence on the part of State election Commission also indicates the political pressure under which they had to work. The Congress Spokesman said that the State Election Commission refused to hear the Congress delegation led by S. Joginder Singh Wasu former Advocate General on 13th of May and even today the Election Commission refused to listen to the complaint of Congress M.L.A. from Sherpur Mrs. Harchand Kaur who rang up the Commission office a number of times regarding highhandedness of Government officials in the counting process.
He said that this has been vindicated by even the partners of the coalition Government the BJP who have condemned the violence by Akalis but even they have been bribed by some lucrative posts by the Chief Minister who have backed out from their promises to the electorate. The Congress Party will stand by its workers. and tomorrow the Party workers and leaders will take solemn oath at the historic Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar to save the roots of democracy , peace and tranquility in Punjab. This mammoth gathering of Congressmen of Punjab will turn the tide in Punjab and will prove waterloo for the Akalis when the people of Punjab will teach a lesson to these people in the coming Parliamentary elections.
