Dr,Avnish Jolly, Chandigarh:As the vacation time arrives, mom’s start looking at the calendar with faint trepidation. It is going to be one more time when they will have to deal with the break and the teens 24×7. With adventure camps gaining popularity amongst the children, the parents seem to be a bit eased up.
We recently caught up with some for a chat at Break Loose Camps, a non-profit organization focusing to create the relationship with nature that we have lost and to bridge the gap between classroom teaching and the practical aspect of learning.
"Summer camp is no longer a tent by the river side or in a jungle. It has much more to offer. The campers learn o many activities that boost their confidence and self-esteem. Today, it encompasses everything form mountaineering activities to camp games, ayurveda to astronomy," says Dr.Anubhav, an Instructor with Break Loose Camps.
"Break Loose Camp has been a wonderful experience for my child. As soon as the vacations started I was clutching at brochures of summer camps and find ways to pack my child and send him to some so that he learns the basic survival skills. This was the one that seemed to be the apt for my child. Now, once back from the camp, he says he wishes that we send him for the same atleast twice an year," smiles Mr. Manish Gupta, father of a camper.
Prerna, another instructor chips in, "Camps are definitely a lifetime experience for the kids. This is the age when they can nurture and hone their talents, their creativity. Unfortunately, such is not being done in schools and hence the rising popularity for outdoor programs. Parents have now-a-days realized that the more exposure their children get, the more open they will be to learning and development."
"Twenty years from now, you will be more disappointed by the things that you did not do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbour and catch the trade winds in your sails." Seems like Mark Twain really wanted fellow human beings to explore, dream and discover.
So in case you have such a craving which you were unable to fulfill, let your child do that.
