A workshop on “Biomedical Waste Management” was organized by Dept. of Hospital Administration, PGIMER, Chandigarh in collaboration with World Health Organisation. Inaugurating the workshop Dr. A. Gunasekar, National programme Officer & focal point (sustainable development & environment) WHO India office stressed on the need of proper management of biomedical waste in the country and urged the participants to make PGIMER an ideal hospital in this field. Prof. A. K. Gupta, Medical Superintendent cum Prof. & Head, Dept. of Hospital Administration, PGIMER, Chandigarh welcoming all participants said that proper training and continuous reinforcement in the form of on job training is very crucial in achieving safe biomedical environment in hospitals. Dr. Ashok Kumar presented the current scenario of biomedical waste in India and informed about the progress of biomedical waste management in India. Dr. Mahesh Devnani of Hospital Administration discussed the current biomedical waste management practices in PGIMER and raised certain isues and suggested the solutions. Dr. Sonu Goel discussed occupational health hazards and suggested the measures to be safe during handling the waste. Dr. R. K. Sharma discussing hospital acquired infection stressed on proper hand washing and segregation of waste. Dr. Rajiv dicussed the legal issues in biomedical waste management. Dr. Arun K Aggarwal while discussing operational aspects said that management of biomedical waste is responsibility of all health care providers. Forty sisters from the nursing department of PGI participated in workshop.
