Chandigarh, April 11: The Surya Champs awards were presented to the students of Class 10 and 12 of various schools of the tricity at a function held here today. Padmashree Dr R C Sobti, Vice Chancellor, Panjab University was the Chief Guest and Dr B S Sohi, Director, University Institute of Engineering and Technology was the Guest of Honour on the occasion. Chairman, Surya Foundation Mr Rajiv Goyal presided over the function.Surya Champs annual awards have been instituted by the Surya Foundation – Centres of Academic Excellence to recognize and honour merit among the students of classes 10 and 12. More than 150 students who excelled in the National I Q Tests held by the Surya Foundation in December 2008 participated in the function along with their families.
“In this world of cut throat competition, there is an increased trend of memorizing the subject matter without going for in-depth knowledge of the same and I appreciate this endeavor of Surya Foundation to inculcate in students, through these awards, the habit of making an extra effort to sharpen their general knowledge and subject skills,” said Dr Sobti.
Speaking on the occasion Dr Sohi appreciated the efforts of Surya Foundation for organizing such a competition and said that such platforms can help our children not only recognize but also hone their full potential.
In all 120 children from twelve participating schools won the prizes which included gift vouchers worth Rs 2500, Rs 2000 and Rs 1000 for first, second and third prize winners respectively.
The Surya Champ 2008 School trophy was given to Bhavan Vidyalaya, Chandigarh for excelling in the tests as overall school champion. Their students scored the highest aggregate marks in the National I Q tests. The Ist runner up trophy was awarded to Army Public School, Chandimandir and IInd runner up trophy was shared by Moti Ram Arya Sr. Sec. School, Chandigarh and D.C. Model Sr. Sec. School, Panchkula.
“Surya Champs is based upon the results of the National I Q Test. This is a multi-choice, computer scoring test which has been initiated by us to stress on the importance of acquiring, applying knowledge and engaging in reasoning by the students. Their performance in these tests help students understands the power of their intellect”, explained Mr Rajiv Goyal, Chairman, Surya Foundation.
