CHANDIGARH–April 30, 2008:Centre for Adult, Continuing Education & Extension, Panjab Univerisity, Chandigarh in collaboration with Citizens Association for Relief Education & Service (CARES) an NGO also organized an Awareness Generating Seminar on “Save the Girl Child” at Maloya Anganwadi Centre, Madrasi Colony, Maloya. More than 50 Women participated in the Seminar. The main objective of the seminar was to make women aware of the declining sex ratio of females and its damaging effects.
Dr Prabha Vig, Sr. Project Officer from the Centre enumerated the main causes which lead women to take extreme steps such as; abortion of female feticide and resistance to give birth to girls are; poverty, responsibility of protecting them, dowry, age old superstitions and believes of Indian society and violence against women etc. She further added that all of us must fight for Girls Right and her Dignity and focus on the positive aspects of Girl Child and remove misconceptions and myths that effect her worth and self esteem. For this she gave a call to awake and work that Girl Child does not become an endangered species
A Film on Girl Child – A Fight for Dignity prepared by the Centre was also shown to participants. Mrs Shiksha Kahlon a volunteer from CARES extended a vote of thanks to all the participants according to Dr. Sween, Director, Centre for Adult, Continuing Education & Extension, Panjab University.
