The India Post,Chandigarh, 24th December, 2008:The Annual Foundation School , sponsored by National Board for Higher Mathematics, Department of Atomic Energy, Mumbai was being held in the Department of Mathematics, Panjab University , Chandigarh from 3rd December 2008.
The Valedictory function of the school was held on 24th of December. The function was presided over by Professor R.P. Bambah, a renowned Mathematician of international fame. The program is coordinated by Professor Sudesh Kaur Khanduja and Dr. Gurmeet Kaur Bakshi of the department with Professor Madhu Raka as Chairperson.
Twenty seven enthusiastic research students from all over India from reputed institutes like IIT Madras, IIT Bombay, IIT Kanpur, ISI Kolkata, Ramanujan Institute of Advanced study in Mathematics, Chennai, Pondichery University, University of Calicut, and University of Trichy, participated in this programme. Besides lectures by the faculty of the department of Mathematics, Panjab University , some distinguished mathematicians from IIT Bombay, ISI Delhi, HRI Allahabad, University of Mumbai delivered their talks and enlightened the young research students. Prof R.S. Kulkarni Director ATM Schools, who was here as a resource person in the school for 20 days, wrote in his e- mail message that AFS at Chandigarh was a success. The students were serious and sincere. The students as well as the instructors learnt new mathematics and view points. He further wrote that Mathematics like music creates bonds, which are almost as thick as blood.
Prof Bambah in his presidential address said that mathematics is passing through a golden age. New areas are being discovered and inter relations between different areas of mathematics are being established. He advised the mathematical community to spare some part of their time to solve the unknown problems according to the Chairperson, Dept. of Mathematics, P.U.
