Chandigarh, Feb 17 : Sri Guru Gobind Singh College, Sector 26, Chandigarh has achieved the milestone of getting the highest number of major/minor research projects among the various educational institutes of the city from University Grant Commission, New Delhi. Four Major research projects have been sanctioned in the subjects of Biotechnology (2), Zoology (1) and Commerce (1). Seven minor Research projects have been sanctioned in Biotechnology (4), Zoology (1), Botany (1) and Economics (1). Our college is focusing on the research, which is a prerequisite for the higher education. Faculty is working hard to do the innovative works in the field of biological, commerce and social sciences. This is the first time that our college has got research grant of more than 37 Lac in the various subjects. Sanctioning of these research projects will be additional advantage in NAAC grading also. The College had already applied to Panjab University for the recognition of Department of Biotechnology as a research centre. All the faculty members of college who have got research grants will be honored by the college management, said Col.(Retd.) Jasmer Singh Bala, Secretary, Sikh Educational Society (SES).
Dr. Jasvinder Singh Bhatti, Assistant Professor in the Department of Biotechnology has been awarded with a major research project of three years duration, worth Rs. 11,37,800/- under title “Identification of susceptibility genes and other risk factors associated with high prevalence of type 2 diabetes in north Indian population”. Dr.Bhatti is also focusing research on the genomic of coronary heart disease and metabolic syndrome in Punjabi population and molecular toxicology of various environmental contaminants. In 2010, he has published his finding on susceptibility genes and risk of type 2 diabetes in Punjabi population in an international Journal. In 2011, he has published two research papers on environmental toxicology in the international journals. In addition to academic duties, he is also working as a coordinator of UGC cell of the college. All the Major/Minor research projects were submitted to UGC under his guidance were sanctioned.
Dr. Inderpal Singh Sidhu from the Zoology department has got Rs. 3,43,300/- to study “the modulatory effects of various antioxidants in rat model”. Dr.Sidhu also submitted research paper for publication in an international journal. Dr. Sonia Chaman from the Department of Biotechnology also got a major project of Rs.7,91,800/- for the “Study of biological diversity and identification of efficient strains among microbial isolates of dairy effluent”.
Dr. Manjinder Singh of commerce department has been sanctioned Rs. 6,25,200/- for the research on the topic “Corporate web disclosure in India: An empirical study”. Dr. Suninder Singh, Associate Professor in Botany has been awarded with a minor project of 1.6 Lac. Minor Research Projects have also been sanctioned to Mrs. Gurjit Kaur Bhatti (1.20 Lac), Dr. Rupinder Kaur (1.7 Lac), Dr. Jyoti Dadwal (1.12 Lac) and Parul M. Bakshi (1.12 Lac), all from the Department of Biotechnology. These projects cover all the areas of the recent research in Biotechnology and molecular genetics of diabetes, obesity and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), Molecular toxicology and Microbial Biotechnology. Dr. Kanwaljit Kaur also got a minor project of Rs.1.10 Lac in the subject of Economics.
