The India Post, Chandigarh,17th May, 2009 : While the city was abuzz with election fervour, the faculty at Anee’s school at Sector 69, Mohali was feeling concerned about the safety of the environment. The school organized a poster making competition on “Save Environment” for its senior students. “This will inculcate awareness among students about the degrading environment and make them eco-friendly”, says Harpreet Grewal, the principal.
The principal educated the students about the depleting ozone layer which is getting destroyed by certain industrial chemicals including ozone depleting refrigerants, halons, and methyl bromide, a deadly pesticide used on crops.
The principal also made the students aware about the serious implications of global warming on our environment. “There is still much uncertainty over the degree by which temperatures will actually rise and what the effects of these rises will be. What is not in doubt is that the earth’s temperature has risen by 0.5°C over the past century, and that recent years have been among the hottest on record”, the principal evinced her concern.
Besides, the school organized some fun-filled events for its junior classes. The tiny tots were seen splashing water on each other with much gusto at their beat-the-heat pool party. Little ones in their swim suits dived into water like mermaids. It was scenic to see the little ones dancing to the tunes of melodious music in the pool.
The school also organised a “green-and-yellow” day to make the students familiar with the colours. They organized an intra-colour calligraphy and spell bee competitions for the students from Class one to eight.
“These kinds of activities satiate the artistic urge of the students and make them creative”, feels one of the Directors of the school, Mr Aneet Goel.
