BANGLORE,12 JULY:Union HRD Minister Arjun Singh has expressed concern over "quite a number" of private higher educational institutions in the country becoming "teaching shops" and misleading students.Expressing regrets over such a trend, he said the education atmosphere in the country should not be spoiled.
Singh stressed on the need to provide access to higher education with equity while inaugurating Bangalore campus of Symbiosis Institute of Business Management (SIBM), an off-shore campus of Pune-based Symbiosis International University (SIU) last evening.
"Higher education in India has come of an age", the Minister said, adding that IITs and IIMs have become brand names.
Karnataka’s Minister for Higher Education Aravind Limbavalli asked the Centre to allot an IIT for Karnataka and sought enhancement in UGC grants to the state universities.
Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa gave an assurance that the proposal by SIU, seeking land to expand its campus Bangalore, will be considered.
