PASIGHAT, Mar 19: Illiteracy retard the growth of development, said the Deputy Commissioner Talem Tapok while addressing the adult learners in a function organized by Bharat Vigyan Samitity, Arunachal Pradesh State Resource Center & State Literacy Mission Authority, Ministry of HRD, GoI on March 19 last. Since Arunachal is one of the lowest literate states, more concerned to raise the literate percentage. Illiteracy is generally prevalent in rural areas where there is no good educational facility nor the parents can afford to send their children to good institutions. Hence the govt has launched the mission to make one and all literate.
In this regard the RTE has been mandatory. Literacy make the people part of development process. He hoped that literacy rate in the district will improve to satisfactory level very soon. He instructed the concerned department to work dedicatedly, devotedly and to put hard work to achieve the goal. He assured all help and cooperation for success of the mission. The DC also released a teachers’ handbook, developed by State Resource Center, Arunachal Pradesh on the occasion. The DDSE Tani Talom said that there are still lot of illiterate people in the district due to various reasons. However, due to good policies of the government, education scenario is improving.
For total literacy, the government has launched the mission. There are learner assessment examinations, which give equivalent certificates for III, V and VIII standards. There is no end to learn and the message has to be passed to all. Learning institutions has been opened in gram panchayat levels and all have to cooperate to make the mission a success. Panky Deori, Director, SRC, Arunachal Pradesh said that non literate people are not capable of understanding the reasons behind their hardship and hardly intervene in the process of social development. They become marginalized in the complex social, financial and political processes. So change is possible when the whole society is educated and reading habit is developed amongst them. That will open up the opportunities for livelihood, education, better health care, proper implementation of the schemes in the villages. Hence, the mission is launched to call the attention of the entire country for total literacy and its potential for empowering people, deepening democracy and make the development process more equitable. This is also to create awareness about the importance and need of literacy and life long education. Though millions have been made literate through this mission yet millions are left to be made literate, he added. (Marbang Ezing)
