8 Nov : Chief Justice of India Justice K G Balakrishnan on Saturday asked people to avoid unnecessary litigations and said there were more than 3.5 crore cases pending in different courts in the country.Speaking after declaring Cheriyanad in the district as ‘litigation controlled village’, Balakrishnan said 48,000 cases were pending in the Supreme Court alone.
People’s interest in litigation was increasing in the country, he said adding this was because of people’s faith in the judiciary. When efforts were made to dispose off 15 per cent of cases, 25 per cent more cases were filed, he said.
The number of cases was increasing because people like to find solution to their issues through courts, he said.It was a good sign for Indian democracy he said adding otherwise, people would have sought alternative methods to find solutions to their problems.
Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan declared the village ‘legally literate’ at the function. Kerala High court Chief Justice H L Dattu presided. State Law Minister M Vijayakumar also attended the function.
