9 Aug : Urban Health & Training Centre, Department of Community Medicine, School of Public Health, PGIMER planned to celebrate the World breastfeeding week (1st – 7th August) in their field practice area. The theme for this year is “Just 10 Steps! The Baby-Friendly Way”. The various activities have been planned to organize various activities to celebrate the week.

A health talk was given by Dr. Navpreet (SR, Community Medicine) and Dr. Jeyashree (JR, Community Medicine) at the Government Model High School, Sector-38 among the girls of classes IX and X. Various audio-visual aids viz. presentation and videos related to breastfeeding were used. Topics related to breastfeeding like the advantages to mother and child and the necessity to spread the message in the family and the community were discussed and stressed upon. There was active participation from the girls.
At the Anganwadi centre in Sector-38C, a health talk was delivered by the PGI Health worker Mrs. Rupinder Kaur to a gathering of more than 25 pregnant and nursing mothers of the area. Dr. Navpreet, Dr. Jeyashree and Dr. Ashutosh (JR Community Medicine) were present to respond to the queries of the ladies. Videos showing the technique of breast feeding, rooming in, expressed breastmilk feeding, hazards of artificial feeding and pacifiers etc were displayed. The common myths related to breastfeeding concerning colostrum, inadequate feeds etc were debated upon. The talk was also attended by anganwadi workers, ANMs and the LHV from UT administration.

A gathering of around forty antenatal females was organized in the Civil Dispensary-38 on the antenatal clinic day. Dr. Harjeet Kaur, SMO of CD-38 delivered the introductory speech. Dr. Navpreet motivated the antenatal females and encouraged them to promote, support and practice (after delivery of baby) breastfeeding. This was followed by an interactive discussion of Dr.Jeyashree, Dr.Ashutosh and Mrs. Rupinder Kaur with the antenatal females. The importance of early initiation of breastfeeding, the hazards of prelacteal feeds and the necessity of exclusive breastfeeding were emphasized.

On the day of the immunization clinic, a presentation and videos on the benfits of breasfeeding, correct positions of mother and baby during breastfeeding, how to express breastmilk and the methods of complementary feeding were shown to around twenty postnatal mothers by Dr. Ashutosh. Dr. Jeyashree moderated a discussion with the mothers where she also responded to their queries.

A focus group discussion was facilitated at anganwadi centre in sector 38D with post natal mothers regarding benefits of breastfeeding by Dr.Ashutosh along with Mrs.Rupinder where different issues regarding breastfeeding were discussed

During our routine Geriatric Clinic, we utilized our contact with elderly to communicate to them and sensitize them about early initiation of breastfeeding and exclusive breastfeeding for first six months.

During our routine house to house visits, the message about benefits of breastfeeding was propagated among antenatal and postnatal mothers by Mrs.Rupinder under supervision of Dr.Ashutosh.
