The National Institute of Nursing Education, Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education & Research, Chandigarh organized a one day workshop on “Suicide Prevention amongst Adolescents” on 6th April, 2013 by Dr.Sunita Sharma & Dr.Karobi Das under the guidance of Dr. Sandhya Ghai, Principal, National Institute of Nursing Education .The chief guest for the event Dr. Ajit Kumar Avasthi, Professor, Department of Psychiatry, PGIMER stressed that suicide is the 3rd most common cause of death in people below 30 years of age. He threw light upon the understanding of the complex phenomenon of ‘suicide’ occurring on a continuum progressing from suicidal thoughts, to planning to attempt, and finally dying by suicide which is the final tragic outcome of this process. He also addressed the delegates highlighting the role of teachers, nurses and health professionals in preventing the suicide amongst adolescents. Prof. Rajesh Gill, The Dean, Faculty of Arts, Panjab University detailed on the Sociological Perspectives on Suicide. The role of Parents and teachers in assessment of suicidal Risk and life skills Educational Training were also taken up during the workshop. During the group work different Strategies to cope up with stress effectively were emphasized.
