Talwar released the book entitled “Text Book of Pulmonary Medicine – II nd Edition, 2010, Authored by Dr D.Behera, Professor, Dept. of Pulmonary Medicine of PGI, Chandigarh and currently on deputation as Director, LRS Institute of Tuberculosis and Respiratory Diseases, New Delhi. The book is Published by Jaypee Brothers , New Delhi .
This is a comprehensive text book on pulmonary Medicine. Authored by Dr D. Behera, one of the senior-most Pulmonologists of the country and one, who is also a senior and highly respected teacher for postgraduates, and post doctoral students of medicine, a researcher and academician par excellence, the book contains 34 chapters and in two volumes having 1834 pages. These two volumes contain valuable literature on chest medicine, which has been thoroughly up-dated with the latest available information on the subject. One of the important aspects of the book is the quotation of Indian literature on various respiratory problems in India . The first edition of the book was published by Dr Behera about 15 years ago and the current one updates the newer developments that have taken place during this period. The book is well comprehended with latest references and rich illustrations of medical and pathology sections. Various sections have a good amalgamation of epidemiology, pathology, pathogenesis, diagnosis, investigations, management and prevention. There is extensive and vivid display of photographs in colour. There are nearly 631 photographs and 269 tables besides a number of appendices and annexures. The chapter on tuberculosis contains the RNTCP and various guidelines of the programme, which is a very welcome step. It also discusses issues of multi drug resistant and extensively drug resistance tuberculosis as emergence problem along with HIV. The text has given an extensive account of the programmatic management of these issues. Such extensive, but comprehensive description of respiratory problems is possible only from an experienced teacher like Dr Behera. An honest and sincere effort has been made to provide thoroughly updated and relevant informations on the subject.
This new edition efficiently covers all aspects starting from history taking and clinical examination, various respiratory symptoms, anatomy and physiology of respiratory system, diagnostic methods used in handling various respiratory diseases and description of all types of diseases affecting the respiratory system. As an experienced teacher Dr. Behera describes the approach to clinical examination of respiratory diseases in a very simple but in a vivid manner, which is still an important area of teaching clinician medicine in this country. Dr. D. Behera is currently the Director of the LRS Institute of TB and Respiratory Diseases, New Delhi land is a Professor of the Department of Pulmonary Medicine of the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and research (PGIMER), Chandigarh , India . He has experienced over 30 years in this field and has been a PG and Postdoctoral teacher and examiner in various universities and for National Board of Examination for many years. He is a recipient of Dr. BC Roy award twice by the Medical Council of India as Eminent Teacher as well as his contribution to Clinical Research. He was a Forget International Fellow at the University of Washington, USA. He has received ICMR Awards thrice besides many National awards and Orations during his distinguished career. He is currently the President of National college of Chest Physicians , President of the Indian Society for Study of Lung Cancer, Chair of the TB section of the Union and the Governor for India of the American College of Chest Physicians. He is also member of the Board of Directors of the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases. His deep involvement with teaching, research and clinical practice of pulmonary medicine has laid to the compilation of this text solely aimed at helping the students in understanding the intricacies of different topics, and also guiding the medical fraternity in the management of pulmonary diseases. Recently he received “The Karel Styblo Prize for his contribution in the field of tuberculosis and lung diseases with specific emphysis on public health by IUATLD.
