Bhopal:Monday, October 13, 2008:The society must not neglect and ignore psychic patients as they can be cured by proper treatment, care and sympathetic attitude towards them. These views were expressed by special judge of District Court Shri Anurag Shrivastava on the occasion of a mental health check-up camp organised at Hamidia Hospital to mark World Mental Health Week here today. Those present on the occasion included head of Psychiatry Department of Hamidia Hospital Dr. R.N. Sahu, magistrate first class Shri Avdhesh Gupta and member of District Court’s District Legal Service Authority Shri Prashant Pathak.Special judge Shri Anurag Shrivastava said that people must be made aware of mental diseases. Psychic patients must be treated with love and affection instead of being subjected to humility. He informed that Mental Health Act 1987 has been enacted in connection with psychic patients. If society cooperates, psychic patients can not only make fast recovery but also join the mainstream of society. Therefore, they should be treated timely and in a better way. Legal advice is also given at courts during the Mental Health Week, he said adding that care should be accorded in the early stage for curbing mental illness.
On this occasion, Dr. Sahu informed that Mental Health Week is organised every year with a view to spreading awareness about mental diseases. During the week various programmes are conducted for the benefit of psychic patients and their relatives. These programmes help remove misconceptions about psychic patients. He said the life of a person can be destroyed by keeping mental disease a secret. During the week, arrangements have also been made at Central Jail and Neuropsychiatry Centre at Koh-e-Fiza for imparting knowledge about Mental Health Act. He said mental illness is not an insoluble problem.
On the occasion, both the judges talked to psychic patients and their relatives and enquired about their health. They also distributed fruits to the patients and later visited patients undergoing treatment at Psychiatry Ward. A number of psychic patients were checked up at the camp and old patients were advised to continue treatment. Doctors of Psychiatry Department were also present on the occasion.
