Jagpreet Sandhu : Eminent PGI Ophthalmologist wins International Award Professor Jagat Ram received the prestigious Prof P. Siva Reddy International Award from All India Ophthalmological Society for 2012 today at Cochin during the annual meeting of All India Ophthalmological Society Conference. This award is given to one eminent ophthalmologist each year for outstanding research work in ophthalmology done in India or anywhere in the world.
He received this award for his landmark research work on Posterior Capsular Opacification which is one of the most common vision disabling problem after successful phacoemulsification with intraocular lens implantation. His research contribution has helped to reduce this vision threatening complication globally. Professor Jagat Ram is presently working at the Advanced Eye Centre at PGIMER, Chandigarh since July 1979. He was awarded WHO fellowship in the field of Phacoemulsification at Storm Eye Institute, Charleston, USA, 1993-1994. He introduced phacoemulsification for the first time at PGIMER, Chandigarh (1994) and Republic of Seychelles (2004). He was invited to write a Guest Editorial for Ophthalmology in 1999. He contributed a complete issue of International Journal “Survey Ophthalmology” on “Elimination of cataract blindness” in 2000. He has published a unique first textbook on “Pediatric Cataract Surgery” in 2007.
He has published over 185 publications in the reputed national and international Journals. He has delivered over 350 guest lectures. He eliminated cataract surgical backlog during two years deputation (2003-2005) as ITEC Expert to Republic of Seychelles. He is on the Editorial Board of IJO, reviewer for Ophthalmology, Ophthalmic Surgery and Lasers, Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. Earlier, he was recognized for his significant contribution in Ophthalmology, namely: WHO award (1999), Dr Daljit Singh Gold by Intraocular Implant and Refractive Society (2001), American Academy of Ophthalmology best poster (2004), Prof LC Dutta Oration (2007), FAMS (2008), Gold Medal at Maharashtra & BOA Conference (2009), Dr PN Sinha Oration and Prof Narendra Swarup Oration in 2010.
