Diapers and sanitary napkins are going to cost more following an excise duty of 10 per cent on these items in the Budget.
“Full exemption from excise on baby and clinical diapers and sanitary napkins is being withdrawn. These items will attract duty at the rate of 10 per cent,” the memorandum to the Finance Bill 2010 said.
Preeti Sonker, the mother of a year-old baby girl, said, “The rates are already high. One packet of 10 pieces costs around Rs 100 and monthly Budget for a baby on this head works out to be not less than Rs 1,200-1,500.”
Prices of mosquito nets are also set to rise after a 4 per cent excise levy.
