February 21- The Chief Election Commissioner of India Dr SY Quareshi today said that “you love democracy and hate politicians, this is not possible”. He said that we have good politicians because of whose policies India is marching towards becoming a super power.
Dr Quareshi was in Gurgaon to inaugurate the 3rd state level philatelic exhibition toady. He said that all the Common Wealth Countries on one side and India alone on other side, our number of voters exceed them. Such large is our democracy and when elections are held, results are out by lunch time. He cited examples about the credibility enjoyed by the Election Commission of India and said that everyone has faith in the Commission irrespective of whether one wins or loses the election.
But at the same time, Dr Quereshi said that a large number of voters living in metropolitan cities do not come out to cast their vote which is unfortunate. These people sitting in their homes keep on cursing the politicians, do they have right to do so, he questioned. It is right of every voter to exercise his franchise and contribute in formation of a government. The Election Commission makes efforts for free and fair polling. He said that our politicians are good. Had it not been so, the fate would have been like that of our neighbouring country which also acquired freedom on the same day.
He said that the Election Commission has started a new Voter Education Division for one and a half year now. Due to this, the voter turn out in UP assembly elections has increased from 30 to 35 percent. In the last 60 years, the polling percentage in UP has been the highest, Dr Quereshi asserted.
