21 July : The Government on Tuesday said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi are fully protected and there was no reason to worry about any naxal threat.
“The Prime Minister and Sonia Gandhi are fully secured. Don’t worry,” Home Minister P Chidambaram said when asked about the threat calls given to the PM and the UPA Chairperson by a Maoist leader in Jharkhand.
The Home Ministry has also advised the state government to take all precautionary measures in the wake of threat calls, sources in the ministry said.
A Maoist leader in Jharkhand has warned that his group could resort to LTTE-style attacks against Congress President Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in the wake of the offensive against naxals.
The Prime Minister and the Congress President might meet the same fate as Rajiv Gandhi had met at the hands of the LTTE, said a press release issued in Garwah district by Jharkhand State Central Committee member-cum-Ghatsilla Sub-Zonal Commander ‘Anupji’ (Anup Mukherji of West Bengal).
A threat has also been issued against Union Home Minister P Chidambaram, the release said and asked all Congress legislators, both in Parliament and the assembly, to quit within a week or face “death warrants”.
