29 May : Nation pays homage to the 7th Prime Minister of India Chaudhary Charan Singh on his 22nd death anniversary on Friday as series of functions are being organised to mark the occasion.
Vice President Hamid Ansari and his son Ajit Singh visited his memorial ‘Kisan Ghat’ and paid floral tributes to the legendary Indian politician.
The main function will be at Kisan Ghat in the National Capital, the samadhi of the late Prime Minister.
Prominent political leaders will assemble to pay floral tributes to the departed leader. An all religion prayer meeting will also be held at the samadhi.
Charan Singh entered politics as part of the Independence Movement. He faught for the sake of the Indian Farmer, which endeared him to the agrarian communities throughout the nation, particularly in his native Uttar Pradesh.Charan Singh headed the Janata Party government for about six months during the post-emergency days and became the country’s fifth Prime Minister.
During his term as Prime Minister the Lok Sabha never met. The day before the Lok Sabha was due to meet for the first time the Indian National Congress withdrew their support from his Bharatiya Lok Dal Government.
Choudhary Charan Singh resigned and fresh elections were held six months later.
He continued to lead the Lok Dal in opposition till his death in 1987, when he was succeeded as party president by his son Ajit Singh.
