Prime Minister Narendra Modi today termed the Emergency, imposed in 1975, as the biggest blow to democracy. Addressing a function ‘Loktantra Ke Prahari’ in New Delhi, Prime Minister said that Emergency should be remembered to draw lessons to further consolidate the democratic values in the country.
At the function, many of those who fought against Emergency and went to jail in 1975-76 were also felicitated.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday led the nation in paying tribute to Bharat Ratna Lok Nayak Jaiprakash Narayan on his113th birth anniversary.
Speaking at ‘Loktantra Prahari Abhinandan’ function in New Delhi, Prime Minister said Jaiprakash Narayan’s Navnirman movement paved the way for a new kind of politics.
Referring to the attack on media freedom during Emergency, the Prime Minister said he does not want to remember emergency to criticize someone, but to constantly be reminded of commitment towards democracy and freedom of press.
On this occasion, addressing the function, senior BJP leader LK Advani congratulated the Prime Minister for organising such function.
On this occasion, around 800 people who fought against Emergency and went to jail in 1975-76 were also felicitated.
