Today is Raksha Bandhan, the festival that symbolises the strong bond between brothers and sisters. Sisters tie Rakhi to their brothers and wish them for their well being as brothers pledge to protect their sisters from all difficulties.
The festival has its roots in history when the Rajput queens practised the custom of sending rakhi threads to neighboring rulers as token of brotherhood.
The festival falls on the full moon day of the Shravan month of the Hindu calendar. President Pranab Mukherjee and Vice President Hamid Ansari have greeted the nation on the festival.
