7 Mar : Asserting that women’s issues remained closed to her heart during the ten years she had been the Congress Prez, Sonia Gandhi on Saturday said the fairer sex played an important role in the development of the country and its future now largely depended on their contribution.
"India’s achievements in the past decade would not have been possible without women’s contributions, just as fulfillment of our dreams and hopes for the future will depend largely on women’s participation," she said in her message to the souvenir titled "Priyadarshini-2009", brought out by the Mahila Congress.
"In the ten years that I have been Congress President, women’s issues have always been especially close to my heart, and have been given high priority by both the party and the UPA government," Gandhi said.
Gandhi released the souvenir with the theme "A successful decade of Smt Sonia Gandhi as Congress President" at her residence in the presence of AICC General Secretary Mohsina Kidwai, President of the Mahila Congress Prabha Thakur and other women leaders of the party on the eve of the International Women’s Day.
In her message, Gandhi said, "It has been heartening to see women’s active participation in the Congress party grow steadily during this period."
