Mandeep Puri, 4 Dec : A candlelight protest march was held at Sector 17 to `unwelcome’ the year 2010 by families affected by the misuse of Section 498 A of IPC.
More than 50 people, including children and senior citizens, gathered with candles to show their resentment towards the government and the judiciary.
The protesters termed 2009 as a `Black Year’, which was marked by a lot of suffering, harassment and mental trauma, wherein families were falsely implicated in dowry cases.
They alleged hundreds of families had been ruined, thousands of jobs were taken way, but the law had remained unchanged.
“ We have lost faith in the judiciary and expect nothing great in the coming year. More sufferings and harassment will be on the cards, if the law remains the same, they rued. The families termed Section 498A one of the easiest ways to earn good money, which is more dangerous than Section 302 (murder) of IPC”, said Nitin Gupta, a victim.
“There are a lot of shortcomings in the law, which give undue advantages to women.
There is a provision, wherein taking and giving dowry is an offence. However, police are quick to register an FIR against husbands and their families for seeking dowry, but not a single FIR has been registered against girls or their families for giving dowry,” said Arun, who is facing a false dowry case.
It is legal terrorism in real, they added.
