19 June:Shri P.I. Suvrathan (IAS Officer 1972 Batch, H.P. Cadre) has been appointed as the first Chairperson of Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) and joined his duties w.e.f. 09.06.2008. Before taking charge as Chairperson, FSSAI, Shri Suvrathan was working as Secretary, Ministry of Food Processing Industries, Government of India and was actively and keenly involved in the initiatives required for growth of food processing sector in the country.Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is being established under Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 for laying down science based standards for articles of food and to regulate their manufacture, storage, distribution, sale and import to ensure availability of safe and wholesome food for human consumption. The Act aims to integrate the food safety laws in the country in order to systematically and scientifically develop the food processing industry and paradigm shift from a regulatory regime to self-compliance.
