10 June :The government has ruled out any dilution in the Women’s Reservation Bill which seeks to ensure 33 percent seats for women in Lok Sabha and state Assemblies.
"There is no question of dilution. It is hypothetical", Parliamentary Affairs Minister P K Bansal told reporters at New Delhi on Wednesday when asked about the talk of dilution of the Bill by pegging the reservation ceiling to 20 percent.
Replying to a volley of questions on the issue, he said the government to try and arrive at a consensus on every piece of legislation. He said President Pratibha Patil had in her address to the joint sitting of Parliament informed that the Bill was one of the priority agenda of the government.
The Bill is before the Standing committee of Parliament which is soon to be reconstituted and government would await its report.Govt having relook at Bill to prevent communal violence Government is having a relook at a bill which seeks to provide more teeth to both the Centre and states to prevent and control communal violence.
Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs V Narayanasamy told reporters that the government wanted to give "another thought" to the Bill following reservations by some NGOs.
"It is being looked into," he merely said when asked about the fate of the Communal Violence (Prevention, Control and Rehabilitation of Victims) Bill which has already been passed by the Union Cabinet.
In her address to the joint sitting of Parliament, President Pratibha Patil had said that her government would seek early approval of the Bill introduced in Parliament.
There has been hue and cry about women reservation bill and some modifications in it for a long time now but i think that such a law itself should not exist. A person (in this case a Man) who has worked for his constituency throughout life will suddenly find that he is not allowed to contest election from that constituency because it is reserved for women. This is really ridiculous in democracy and is definitely biased against men. Shortcuts are not always good. If women want to come to parliament then they should fight in a democratic way with men. This will give them more respect. NCW and other women organizations are misusing the enormous power being bestowed to them and even the media now are acting irresponsibly. When the OBC quota was introduced the media was responsible enough to show both sides of it. But now even they are biased and are blaming politicians in delaying the passage of the bill. This is a sad situation wherein talent and people’s will are given a second seat. The advocacy of such a law shows immaturity and lack of responsibility on the part of its supporters. I hope such a law is not passed so that any capable PERSON can contest election from the constituency of his/her choice.
