22 Jan : The government has declared 24th January as the national girl child day, coinciding with the date of swearing in of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, the first woman to occupy the post in the country.Launching a sustained campaign alongside the declaration of the girl child day, Women and Child Development Minister Renuka Chaudhry said the focus would be on targeting scourges of female foeticide, domestic violence and malnutrition.
"Indira Gandhi is an inspiration for women across the country. Thus it is only appropriate that we declare the girl child day on the date of her swearing in," she said.
The campaign against female foeticide will include TV spots, advertisements and school lessons propagating gender equality, the official said.In the area of domestic violence, the focus would be on providing enough funds to states and ensuring that all states appoint the requisite protection officers.
Apart from this, the government would award anganwadi workers, women who have shown courage and talented children.The ministry is organising a number of activities which would culminate on 8th March coinciding with the international Women’s Day.
