28 Dec : Mourning the death of Imam Hussain and his followers, Ashura-the tenth day of mourning, was witnessed throughout the Capital.
Muharram, the word is derived from ‘‘haram’’ meaning forbidden. Indulging in sins, evil and fights are forbidden in this month. It is the first month of the Islamic calendar and is very sacred to Muslims.
As Muslims, particularly Shia Muslims, all over the world, people in Delhi as well take out large processions in this month particularly on the tenth day of Muharram called Yaumi-Ashura to mourn the death of Imam Hussain and his companions.
The story dates back to 680 CE when the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, was brutally massacred in alongside his family and friends in Karbala.
In Delhi, it was a day of speeches, public processions, and great grief.Men and women chanted and beat drums as a part of mourning.
Speeches emphasize the importance of the values for which Husayn sacrificed himself, his family, and his followers.
