3 Feb : An exhibition titled ‘Democracy in India from past to present’ was inaugurated by Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar at Madhya Pradesh Vidhan Sabha premises as part of the five-day-long conference of presiding officers and secretaries of legislative bodies in the country.
The exhibition traces the growth and development of democratic traditions in the country, beginning from the ancient times to the modern parliamentary institutions, a release issued on the occasion said on Wednesday.
It lays emphasis on the democratic heritage in ancient India, including the Rig Vedic and Buddhist periods, Freedom Movement, Constitution of India and working of Indian Parliament with photographs, write-ups, charts and press-clippings.
The exhibition also showcases the Indian Federal System and the legislative set-up in different states of the country, with particular emphasis on legislative activities in Bhopal.
Photographs related to the Imperial Legislative Council, Council of States, Central Legislative Assembly and Constituent Assembly have also been shown.It also highlights the evolution and origin of the Office of the Speaker and importance of ‘Presiding Officers and Secretaries Conference’.
