26 Feb :The government’s proposal to lay guidelines for the media in the event of terror attacks would be taken up for finalisation only after "widest possible consultation" with all stake holders, the Rajya Sabha was informed.
Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Anand Sharma, in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha, said that no time frame for taking the decision on content regulation on television has been fixed.
"A section of broadcasters have opposed regulation by the government. The government has given a commitment that any change in the Cable Television Network (Regulation) rules would be taken up for finalisation only after widest possible consultation with all concerned stakeholders," Sharma said on Thursday.
He also informed the house that a Media Consultative Committee has already been formed under the Chairmanship of the Secretary, Information and Broadcasting Ministry to keep a tab on television coverages of sensitive events.
Mentioning the terms of reference for the committee, Sharma elaborated that it would form regular consultation between the government and various professional media bodies and provide a platform for exchanging views on concerns of the civil society.
