12 June:In a move aimed at expediting resolution of water-related disputes, the government approved a Rs 234.3-crore scheme for collating information on the country’s water resources and their utilisation.
"The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs today gave its approval to the Development of Water Resources Information System scheme, which would be fully operational by the end of 2011," Finance Minister P Chidambaram told reporters after the Cabinet meeting in New Delhi on Thursday.
Under the scheme, information on the availability and utilisation of the country’s water resources would be collected, which may be used by relevant organisations, agencies and individuals associated with planning, development, management and research on water resources.
The information would also be used to undertake methodical planning, design and management for faster resolution of water-related disputes.
Barring sensitive and classified data, all information would be in public domain, he said. Courtsey : DD NEWS
