6 June : A skeleton of one of the oldest and rare species of mammoth, which is estimated to be about one million year old has been discovered in the Archaeological Park of Viminacium.
The skeleton measuring five meters long and weighing 10 tons is probably a descendant of the tropical, so-called ‘southern mammoths’ which arrived in Europe from northern Africa over one million years ago, Park Director Miomir Korac said on Wednesday.
The skeleton was discovered in sand at a depth of 27 meters, he said
“It was unusual to find such a well preserved mammoth skeleton in a river mound”, he added.
